Why play Ultimate?

Ultimate Frisbee is great for its focus on teamwork, fitness, and sportsmanship. It combines physical exercise with strategic play, is inclusive and accessible, and fosters a strong global community. Plus, it’s fun to play outdoors!

What is “spirit of the game”?

The “Spirit of the Game” (SOTG) is a fundamental part of Ultimate that emphasizes fair play, conflict resolution, and respect for opponents. It is a self-officiated sport that places the responsibility of fair play solely on the athletes themselves by requiring each player to know the rules and make their own calls, without the help of a neutral official. At BIU, we teach our students about SOTG and encourage them to embody these values both on and off the field.

What does Bx & Gx mean? What about FMP and MMP?

In Ultimate Frisbee, these abbreviations are often used to describe gender-based team compositions and player categories in mixed-gender leagues or tournaments. These terms help organize teams and manage gender balance in games and practices. Read DiscNW’s full Gender Inclusion Policy to learn more.

  1. Bx & Gx:
    • Bx (Boy/Man): Refers to male players on a team.
    • Gx (Girl/Woman): Refers to female players on a team.
  2. FMP & MMP:FMP can indeed stand for Female Matching Player. This term is often used to denote a player who matches the female gender requirement in a mixed-gender game or event, ensuring that teams meet gender balance rules.Similarly, MMP stands for Male Matching Player, referring to players who match the male gender requirement in mixed-gender play. These terms help ensure that teams adhere to gender equity guidelines and maintain fair play in mixed-gender formats.

Who can play with BIU? Do I need to live on Bainbridge Island?

Currently BIU coordinates the Bainbridge High School Club Ultimate team and supports Middle School Ultimate at Hyla Middle School. Scrimmages with alums and others in the community that are interested in Ultimate occur throughout the year  when there is interest.
Anyone is the West Sound region (Suquamish, Poulsbo, North Kitsap, etc.) are welcome to play with BIU. Please reach out if you would like to share your interest in playing with us.

Is this an expensive sport?

BIU and DiscNW use a tiered fee structure for players. This approach balances the need for a sustainable financial model while also recognizing that families have varied financial circumstances.
BIU Player fees are the main way we ensure that BIU provides a quality ultimate experience for our kids. Paying an amount that is reasonable for your family helps ensure a shared commitment from all involved to the continued success of the Bainbridge Island Ultimate community. This player fee is paid when you register for the team via TeamSnap.
Players are also required to register with DiscNW to play in the league. The DiscNW registration and fee can be done on the DiscNW site. This registration also includes a tiered fee structure.
